Being a shabby loving cottage gal, I love the look of handmade patchwork.
I wish I had more time to dedicate to fabric crafts… but alas, I don’t,
So I turn to the closest thing possible… faux patchwork.
I don’t want to take anything away from those amazingly talented patchworkers. Nothing is ever better than the real thing… but, sometimes you just have to adjust your expectations if time is not on your side.
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I wanted to make something sweet to use for Valentine’s week.
I don’t usually decorate my home for Valentine’s Day, but I like to have a few little things that acknowledge the season of love.
I’ve delved into my scraps bag again and put together a couple of mug rugs to use for coffee and sweet treats with my girlfriends and family.
Have you seen my previous faux patchwork tutorial HERE?
I made these mug rugs the same way. Simply iron Visoflex or any other brand of appliqué adhesive paper onto the back of your chosen fabrics. For my mug rug, which measured 30 cm x 20 cm (12” x 8”), I made one larger rectangle 20 cm x 15 cm and 5 strips of 20 cm x 3 cm.
After ironing the scrap pieces onto my background fabric, I used a decorative stitch on my sewing machine to sew over all the edges where two fabrics met.
I hand stitched around my heart and made a little ‘LOVE’ patch with stamps and permanent ink.
Next, I sandwiched a piece of felt between my top patchwork piece and a backing fabric, all cut to 30 cm x 20 cm.
To finish, I added a 2” wide binding strip to the front, then folded it over with miterd corners and slip stitched to the back.
These were pretty quick and easy to make!
I made several in an afternoon and found that preparing them all at each stage was quicker than making one at a time.
Imagine the possibilities with different colours and fabrics!
I have GreenGate latte cups in blue, pink and burgundy, so I chose this colour combination for my kitchen…. plus I love the cottage look of combining florals, spots and stripes.
