Homemade Beauty & Household Products Showcase

If you’ve been coming here for awhile, you already know I’m an old fashioned apron wearing gal who likes to put the homemade and home baked back into everyday living. . .

So when I heard Barb and Debbie were putting together a showcase of homemade beauty and household products, I was thrilled to be one of the 18 bloggers selected to take part.

I already had a current favorite homemade product in mind to share with you.

Shabby Artt Boutique - Gardener's Lemon Hand Scrub 3

It’s something I’ve been using myself for the past few weeks and I love it!

I’ve always been a keen gardener, so homemade sugar soap is not new to me. In fact, I shared a homemade recipe for one back here in 2011.

Since we moved to the resort, gardening has taken on a new dimension. . . it got much bigger!!

With over an acre of tropical rainforest to take care of, hubby and I spend time in the garden most days. This is heavy duty gardening and my hands and nails were showing those tell tale signs of hard working hands…. even when wearing gardening gloves.

So I gave a recipe I found online a try. The first two batches weren’t like the previous sugar soaps I’d made, so I played with the ingredient quantities until I got it the way I like sugar soap to be.

Shabby Art Boutique - Gardener's Lemon Hand Scrub

It’s a simple recipe…

Pop your sugar, lemon juice and zest in a small bowl and gradually add the olive oil a spoon at a time and stir to mix. If you find the mixture is too dry, add a little more oil.

Store the mixture in a wide mouthed jar and keep in the fridge.

I find the coolness of the sugar scrub and the lovely lemon scent is so soothing.

To use, take about a tablespoon full of the mixture and rub between your hands. The scrub has an exfoliating effect that leaves your tired and dirty hands feeling refreshed, clean and smelling faintly of lemons.

  1. Oh, it sounds heavenly! I may make some up just to have that summer smell to get me through some of our winter!

    • Sending you lovely summery thoughts Elle. We’ve had a hot and humid summer here and its far from over yet. I hope you get some relief from the cold soon 🙂

  2. I can almost smell the lemons as I read this. I will have to give this a go.
    Toni xx

  3. The smell of this scrub must be wonderful. I adore the scent of lemon and know that I would enjoy using this scrub. My mom and I are avid gardeners and I now have a great Mother’s Day idea for her. Thanks so much for sharing!

  4. Hello Kerryanne! This sounds amazing! I just want to be able to get out into the garden AND to try your Gardener’s Lemon Sugar Hand Scrub! I will be giving this a try – your photos are marvelous – LOVE the flowers!
    Kathy

    • I hope the better weather is there for you soon Kathy. We have the opposite problem… the humidity is so high and the days so hot that we need to garden at dawn. The flowers are frangipanis and have the most gorgeous scent. 🙂

  5. I love the idea of using this after working in the garden! It’s such a pretty color too!

    • Kerryanne says:

I was surprised how bright the colour was from just the lemon zest and juice of one lemon. It is very soothing after giving your hands a work out in the garden. I wear gloves and still my hands get all calloused and sore. 🙂

  6. Oh Kerryanne,
This is got to be so heavenly on your hands!!! I am going to make up this when summer comes and I am out gardening every day. Thanks for sharing this amazing homemade product.
    Kris

    • Kerryanne says:

Well, I really like it Kris… especially because I know the ingredients are all natural and safe. Hope you like it if you do make it. 🙂

  7. My hands could really use this so I am looking forward to trying tomorrow. Yay!

  8. thanks for the fun blog hop, kerryanne!

  9. so perfect for me…I’m starting to garden again already! thanks

    • Kerryanne says:

I like the refreshing feel of the cooled scrub Stephanie, but it is still summer here. If you have cold weather there you might want to store it out of the fridge. Happy gardening 🙂

  10. This sounds great… I love the scent of lemon, especially in the kitchen! Bet this would be great to take away the odor on your hands after chopping onion, etc. Have to try it!! It’s been great fun to visit everyone on the tour and see what they made! Blessings, Sondra

    • Kerryanne says:

What a great idea Sondra… I hadn’t even thought of using it for cleaning my hands after cooking with onions and garlic. I’ll give it a try tomorrow. the lemon scent is quite strong, so I recon it will work. 🙂

  11. I bet this smells amazing Kerryanne! My hands are always so dry – can’t wait to try!

    • Kerryanne says:

It does have a very distinct Lemon scent Maryann, but less lemon zest would decrease the scent. Personally, I love the fresh smell of lemons 🙂

  12. Your pictures are simply gorgeous and I can almost smell the lemon popping thru the screen. This recipe is so simple, why would anyone not want to try it? I know I can’t wait. Thanks so much for joining us for our showcase. xxoo

  13. This sounds good enough to eat! I will for sure be trying this one. Great tute Kerryanne!
    xo

    • Kerryanne says:

Hmm… my daughter did offer to taste it Becca!! All natural kitchen staples, so no probs if the kids did taste test it 🙂

  14. First sign of spring I’m making this. I love to garden and my hands always show it. I usually use Fels Naptha to scrub up ~ super harsh ~ but this year I’ll have this on hand.

    • Kerryanne says:

Your hands feel so smooth and clean after rubbing the scrub over them Mary Beth. I hope you like it too. 🙂

  15. I bet this smells amazing too! My hands are so horrible this year! I will have to try this, thanks for sharing!

  16. What a great idea! I’m saving this one for when I start my gardening again this spring! Thanks for sharing!…hugs…Debbie
